How to Combine a Coastal Theme with a Farmhouse Theme

This post is written in collaboration with Walmart.  Of course, all opinions are my own.

I don’t believe any of us decorators are just ONE specific style.  At least I am not.  My style is farmhouse, shabby chic, and cottage all combined into one.  When Walmart asked if I wanted to collaborate on this Coastal Theme project, I thought it would be really fun, and challenging, to maybe add a coastal theme to my crazy style to see if I could get our master bedroom to look cohesive with both.

People reach out to me all of the time over on Instagram and Facebook asking for advice on a certain decor style.  Because they are lost and have no clue where to begin when they want to add a completely different style to their current look.  I use EVERYTHING that I love and try not to focus too much on the “name” of a style.  I think they can all be combined.

So, today, I am showing you MY TAKE on a coastal theme and my farmhouse / shabby chic/ cottage style combined.

Coastal Themes at Walmart

First off, Walmart Home is basically a one stop shop when it comes to so many items, including many different decor styles.  Did you know they have an entire line of Beachy Wall Decor on Walmart.com?   The line has so many gorgeous  pictures to incorporate into your room if you want that beachy coastal theme.  You need to check it out!   And don’t forget to check out the Bedroom Swells line on Walmart.com, too!  It has everything from bedding to rugs to baskets to even lighting.  A person could furnish an ENTIRE coastal theme from those two lines.

Where to Start

Bedding

The first thing I like to do when re-decorating a room and combining different styles is to choose the bigger items.  In a bedroom, the easiest place to start is bedding.   Once I find the perfect bedding, then I can start building the other items around that.  I found this gorgeous light grayish blue chambray comforter that is SO SOFT.  It has little frayed areas in the design which gives it so much texture and is completely budget friendly.   The Bedroom Swells line also has this cute ruffle cotton duvet cover if you prefer a duvet, and this gray chambray comforter which is more masculine.

Rugs

My second step is usually choosing a rug for the area.  The Bedroom Swells line has several rugs that are just gorgeous.  I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted to incorporate in my space, so I went with this Natural Jute Hand Braided Floral round area rug to add lots of texture, and to give our bedroom some warmth.  This Safavieh Adirondack rug would have been absolutely gorgeous, too!

Artwork

The easiest way to combine the two different styles of farmhouse and coastal is to hang coastal prints and pictures on your shutters or old windows.  I had a hart time choosing what wall art I wanted to use because there are so many pretty prints.  I chose the two adirondack chairs, on the pier, in front of the water because, quite frankly, I could see Deb and I sitting there for HOURS.  Of course, there would be some cocktails involved.  I LOVE this one, which is simply the ocean waves.  It looks so peaceful.

Throw Pillows and Poufs

Of course, I am a throw pillow freak. ????  I chose some white knitted ones because I am a sucker for any white pillow with texture.  Bedroom Swells line has several to choose from, along with different poufs.  I am a sucker for poufs, too. ????  They just add so much texture and interest to a space.

Lamps

I think this cute ombre side table lamp is adorable, along with this set of clear glass ones.  I LITERALLY had two of these gold little gooseneck side table lamps in my cart but decided to add a pop of color with the others.  But, the gold ones would go with so many different combined styles, including a beachy, boho vibe.  Now that would be fun throwing that all together, too.

Storage and Laundry Baskets

I LOVE decorating with baskets.  They add so much texture.  This set of two huge baskets are so budget friendly.  You can not only store magazines, extra throws, but a few extra throw pillows look cute tucked in them, too.  OH…. And, I have used wicker laundry baskets FOREVER for my laundry day.  I just think they don’t looks as janky sitting by my washer and dryer since I have an open concept laundry room.   And they still look pretty in your bedroom with dirty clothes, too. ????

What do you think?

I hope this gave you some type of inspiration that combining two different styles isn’t that difficult at all.  I hear all of the time that people don’t even know where to begin.  Just remember to start with the bigger things like bedding and rugs and add a few more layers in lamps, pictures, baskets, and even greenery and florals.  Before you know it, your room looks cohesive and its filled with everything you love.

And if you are looking for some great coastal and beach ideas, do not forget to check Walmart Home for some more inspiration.  They have so much more that I didn’t mention.

Let me know in the comments below what you think!  Or you can always chit chat over on Instagram and Facebook.  I would love to have you over there, too!

  • I love it! Gorgeous! I think my style is farmhouse, coastal and bohemian, if that can be a style! You've done an awesome job incorporating your styles into one!

  • I was so happy this morning on IG to hear you were combining the two. I have been following you and Deb for a few months now. I messaged you last week and mentioned I love your home, and I Have decorated my home ( a modular) with a lot of the same things, and have for years. But, I live at a lake and I also love “ LAKEY “ things. I didn’t think I could combine an oar with a hundred year old photo of a distant relative in a huge round frame. But, I am doing it now. Now if Canadian Wal Marts were as awesome as yours I would be a happy girl.

    • Oh my gosh... Thank you... and that oar idea will be amazing with old photos. I'm so glad you loved this!

  • I love it ! It all came together beautifully. Everything rolled into one ! Again love it

  • Thank you so much for sharing, for those of us who love to decorate but are not always quit sure how to incorporate what we like in our homes and have several different taste this does really help. Please continue to do this and I love that your doing it from Walmart so we can afford it and still make our homes look beautiful! You are amazing!

    • Oh I'm so glad you love it. This is one of my favorite things to do, so I will for sure continue.

  • Had no idea WalMart carried this line or any line, for that matter. You did a great job selecting those items for your room. So excited that you put a pop of color in there! I love color and so many are afraid to use any color, besides tan, beige and cream. I am loving on pink, soft pink right now. Your room looks wonderful!

  • Love it. Right across the street from my house is a little river. So I am very used to using "coastal" decor in my house. I love the look. I am also a Use What I Love even if it doesn't fit person in my decor so I totally love what you have done with your bedroom. Love the picture...my Master Bedroom in up for redo in September!!! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • I’ve been looking for some amazing baskets that are affordable!! Thank you so much for what you have shown us. I never knew WalMart had so much for home design!
