Mixing Different Wood Tones and Primitive Cabinet in the Kitchen

I have mentioned a few times over on Instagram that I have a HUGE week with a few deadlines, etc.  And, then we leave on Friday for New Orleans.  What do you do when you have deadlines and feel overwhelmed?  You take a trip to the antique mall to get your mind off of all of it.  I was joking around during stories talking about all the ways to procrastinate.  Because I am the queen.  ???? I really do work better under pressure.  The more time I have, the more things I can find to do other than what I am supposed to do.

I’ve had my green chippy cabinet for a few years now.   You can look back through my Instagram feed and spot it several times throughout the old house.  It originally held all of my white ironstone.  We then used the top over the laundry area and paired the bottom with a different top.  I ALMOST sold it when we moved here but it fit perfectly in the kitchen to use as a pantry.  We went from a walk-in pantry to no storage at all.  So the big green chippy cabinet worked perfectly for that.

What color does to me inside…

All of you neutral people get me.  ???????? I know you do.  I LOVE to see color in other people’s homes.  One of my friends has lots of color and I think it looks so pretty when I walk in her home.  I just can’t live in it.  When we had colored walls years ago, I found myself changing the color every year.  It would hit me out of the blue… “OK… I’m painting this kitchen today.  I can’t take it any longer.”  Deb used to say that our rooms were going to end up an inch smaller because of how many times coats of paint we had. ????  It wasn’t until I realized when I painted two rooms a creamy white that I found my peace.  The creamy white walls stayed for years, until we moved from that house.  It was that realization that color makes me anxious.  And when I get tired of it, there is no keeping it.

I’m an anxious person to begin with so I don’t need anything else stimulating that part of my brain.  ????  I am also realizing that the “frillier” a piece of furniture is, the busier it looks to my eye, and I will tire of that quickly, too.  I’m very drawn these days to plain and simple primitive pieces.  Remember the HUGE primitive piece we just bought for the dining room?  It is one of my favorites.

New Primitive Cabinet in the Kitchen

While I was procrastinating on Saturday, I walked into the antique mall and immediately fell in LOVE with this primitive cabinet.  It’s clean lines and simplicity is just gorgeous to me.  The wood tone is stunning and matches my love for woods and whites.  If I stick with plain old woods and whites, I don’t tire of the pieces.

Can you mix different wood tones together in the same room?

I get this question quite frequently.  Let me start by saying I’m not an expert decorator.  I didn’t go to school for design, etc.   With that being say, my answer to the above question is YES.

I think to get a cohesive, relaxed look, they need to be of the same wood tones.  I’m drawn to pine and oak which are generally medium-toned woods, which I think go so well with all of my neutral whites and creams.  I love the contrast of the woods and whites together.  And, mixing different tones of wood pieces in every room gives me the option of moving each piece anywhere I want to use it… which is something I do quite often.  I love the ability to move a small dresser from the bedroom and use it as a side table in the living room and not have to worry about color.  If everything is white, cream, pine or oak wood, it will never look out of place.

Now…. I have gotten a few really dark pieces of furniture for little money that I ended up painting white.  Because they felt too harsh for me mixed with everything else.  So, that is why I stick with the lighter to medium color wood tones.   AND……  remember that it’s YOUR house.  If you want to mix and match wood tones, do it!   Home decor is like make-up, or painting a picture.  YOU are the artist and can do whatever you want to do.  There are no rules.  At least in my book there aren’t.

Thanks for stopping by my site today.  I love to hear from you guys.  Let me know what you think of my new cabinet or if you have any questions.

  • Love! I finally figured this out about myself also. Wood and whites all me...color stresses me out. LOL I'm currently transitioning my house which is basically a 750 square foot box! Very hard with furniture placement since the front half of my house is the kitchen with a 90 degree "bar" area smack in the middle, dining room and living room. I'm going to knock that out in March and open up the whole room. The the wood and whites are calming me meanwhile hahahaha

    • Thank you for saying all that! That's exactly how I feel about my woods and whites. Too much color makes me anxious. I love it in other people's homes but not mine. Thanks for putting words to the song my heart sings. ????

  • Absolutely LOVE this new/old cabinet!! The wood tone is SO beautiful! I hope you two have a safe, amazing trip to New Orleans!

  • I love your new piece and like it better than the green one. Love your home decor. I'm impressed with how you've decorated that small rental! Love you guys!

  • I love the cabinet. I love soft woods. I would never do Mahagony, though. I tend to like my walls neutral, upholstered pieces neutral, and add some color with pillows, etc.

  • We recently moved from our Victorian house and into a small open concept ranch. The victorian seemed to call out for jewel tones and I went with that (and loved it). In our small house, because it is open concept and small I have gone with light shades of white and gray. While I really do like the lighter shades I'm not very good at choosing the colors. What creamy shades do you use? I love everything you have done!

  • I’m interested in the brand and name of your go to creamy white. I started laughing when you said you were painting a different color every few years!! That was me too ! I’m so glad I found you two! Thanks for sharing!

  • Love your cabinet. I have one like that except mine has glass in the top doors. It was my grandparents. It sat in their room where you came in the house. Grandpa put his muddy boots in it.
