Neutral Valentine’s Sign in the Kitchen

I wanted to throw together a neutral Valentine’s Day look in the kitchen here at the cottage.  I’m not a huge decorator for Valentine’s Day, but thought it would be cute for something different.  I used a lot of what I had for this look.  But, also made a neutral heart sign for the occasion and it was so simple.

Neutral Valentine’s Sign in the Kitchen

I found some cute little wool and felt hearts and thought they were adorable.  So the idea of making this heart sign came from there.  I wanted a simple sign to lean up against the backsplash area.   I asked Deb if she had a 2 x 12 piece of scrap wood.  She ran out to look in her workshop and ended up making it a little more extra than I expected.  Because she is like that.   She added a few boards together and then added a trim piece around the outside, which I LOVE.

I started by cutting a heart shape out at the correct size using my Cricut.  And then I painted the heart using some white paint that I had on hand.  It needed to be accented a little more so I used a sharpie around the edge to give it a little more definition. I gave the entire heart sign a thorough sanding with 120 grit sand paper, since I wanted it to look rustic.  The heart sign was exactly what I wanted.  It is neutral, looks a little festive, and it was VERY simple to make.

To complete this neutral Valentine’s Day display…

I like to start my displays with some type of base, and in this case I used a cutting board.  It’s actually one of my favorites.  I recommend a tray, basket, old barrel lid, cutting board, etc.  Then, I added my little wool hearts to an old electrical insulator.   Since this is beside the sink, I added all of our scrub brushes, my dish soap dispenser, and a candle, of course.  The artificial topiary is one of my favorites to display by the sink.  And then just for fun, I added my cake plate with my favorite fake cake, a stack of dishes, and another artificial fern.  The cake plate and dishes won’t stay there, but I thought they looked cute for the photos.

And there you have it…  A simple neutral Valentine’s Day display.

I hope it gave you a few ideas for your own spaces.  I kept it really simple so it would be easy to take some of these ideas and make them your own.

  • I love that heart sign SO much!! seems like an easy DIY project i need to try. I love your decor so much! thank you!!

  • I LoVe this look. So intentionally neutral and still very effective to reflect what I call a "hallmark" forced day! VaLeNtiNeS should be everyday...at least the days "you" feel are right! So with that in mind, Happy Hearts day to you both. Where did you find the wee felt hearts? I could make them, but likely not worth the time that needs to be invested if they are inexpensive already!
