Old Time Pottery Pumpkin DIY

Did you see my reel over on Instagram?

I got this idea of making a pumpkin to look the same way as my yellow ware collection.  I have been collecting antique yellow ware bowls for YEARS…  probably since my early 20s actually.  The bowls have a patina that is unlike anything new today.  You know that neutral colors are the way I roll and I feel like the creamy yellow and gold colors match so well with my woods and whites theme.  Plus, they are antiques so there’s that.

I want to decorate my yellow ware cabinet this year for fall and fill it with fall sprigs and pumpkins.  So I wanted it all of the same color tones and came up with this idea to turn a ceramic pumpkin into an old time pottery looking pumpkin.  And wanted to share this little DIY with you.  Because I think it turned out really cute.

Old Time Pottery Pumpkin DIY

I hopped online to find a good shape of pumpkin that I thought would look cute within my yellow ware bowl collection.  I loved the shape of this orange pumpkin and love the fact that it had a little battery operated light inside.  Another little black, white, and orange pumpkin popped up and I thought I needed that, too, because the prices is so good.  Remember… I am going to make this look like an old time pottery pumpkin.  So you can pick out any pumpkin you like.

Supplies needed:

Pumpkin of your choice

Acrylic Paint – I chose orange, brown, and cream

Paint Brush

Paper plate or bowl to mix paint

Baking Soda

Flour

I am simply sharing directions on this post, but if you are a visual person, it may be easier to watch the reel here.

Directions:

  • Add your paint to the paper bowl
  • Add baking soda to your paint –  The more you add, the more texture it will have
  • Paint your pumpkin and let it dry to the touch
  • Sift flour over your pumpkin and brush the excess off with a dry paint brush
  • Spray with a sealer

I love how these little pumpkins turned out and can see how addicting this technique could be.  Can you imagine all of the things we could turn into old time pottery pieces?  Also…stay tuned for these guys to wind up in my yellow ware cabinet.  I will for sure be sharing.

  • Some years orange is a welcome change. Some years orange is too “in your face” and subtle fall colors are best. Thanks for showing us the alternatives. You are an inspiration!
