Repurposed Piano Bench Turned Essential Oil Cabinet

A few months ago, I swear I had the bird flu.

Maybe it was the swine flu.

Whatever it was, I coughed harder than I have ever coughed in my entire 150 years living on this Earth.  I woke up one morning completely unable to talk.  I used sign language to tell Deb that my lung was laying on the bedroom floor and that I believed I had paralyzed my vocal cord.  I would have sworn I did.

Do you remember?  It was when deb was working on installing that huge chippy column in our entryway and I was all tucked in my nest on the couch.  A fun time was NOT had by all!

My own thoughts on Healthcare

First off, I use conventional healthcare for emergency situations always.  But, I believe it’s best to let my own immune system do the fighting of certain types of symptoms.  This is my own belief.  The wifey would much rather take a pill and get on with it, but me, I like to suffer.  Kidding.

With all of that said and being over 2 weeks into this self diagnosed “bird flu”, I spoke with a family member who is a physician.  I went over all of my symptoms and basically she said we could go either way.  She could order me an antibiotic or I could keep fighting it myself because it may just be the virus that was going around.    I chose the fighting it myself.  A few days later, I could fight no more.

I called her back for the antibiotic and took it as prescribed.  It still didn’t help, which meant to me that it was some type of viral thing and I just had to wait it out.

Still Coughing

Six weeks into this crap, I was SO exhausted, because I could never get more than a few minutes of sleep without coughing.  I was SO mad because I hadn’t slept more than a few hours each night for over six weeks.  And, I was SO sad at the same time because who isn’t emotional when they are sick and tired?  I think there may have been a few tears.

Me (while typing this post):  “How would you describe me when I am TIRED, MAD, AND SAD all at the same time?”

Deb:    “Uh… tired, mad, and sad?   That is one hot mess, which I try to avoid.”

Tired + Mad + Sad  =  BIG FAT HOT MESS

What FINALLY soothed MY miserable symptoms?

I believe essential oils play a huge role in my own personal healthcare. I use essential oils daily for some reason or another, whether it be defusing it in our home or using it topically for an ailment.    To the people who believe the same, I just had to share what finally soothed my miserable symptoms.

We run our diffuser every night while we sleep, but I finally decided to basically sleep with it.  I practically laid on top of that thing.  I defused both peppermint and on-guard oils the entire night directly into my breathing area, rather than just in the room.  I chose peppermint because it works so well for my sinus and allergy symptoms and On-Guard provides a natural alternative for immune support.   After the first night, I noticed a huge improvement in my coughing and after the third night, I felt 100 times better.

For all of you essential oil using peeps that are suffering with your own self-diagnosed bird or swine flu, please remember this combo.   Your spouse will thank you.

You’re welcome.

Repurposed Piano Bench turned Essential Oil Cabinet

That story brings me to one of my all time favorite repurposed projects that I just had to share with you.   Admittedly, I think every single repurpose Deb does is the “best ever.”  But, combine my love for my essential oils AND a fabulous repurposing idea, you have an over the top project.

Isn’t this piano bench turned essential oil cabinet about the coolest thing ever?   I have this hung in our laundry room which happens to be an “open concept” type of room that can be seen from the kitchen.  It makes me pretty darn happy every time I see it.

I accidentally erased my BEFORE pictures of the actual one I used, but I found one similar online that looks so much like it, I had to do a double take.

Pinterest Picture

Deb hacked the legs off and used the bench part as the actual cabinet, and then added shelves from small pieces of wood leftover from another project.

I painted the shelves and the original bead board on the back.

She then added one of these metal do-dads to keep it closed and added an old antique handle on the front to give it a little more character.

Yes, I keep my oils in alphabetical order so I can easily find each one.

You can stop laughing now.

I thought it was a perfect and very functional way to house some of my favorite things.  Ahhhh.  And the smell.  To those of you who have an essential oil cabinet, you KNOW what I’m talking about.

It smells like health!

I hope you enjoyed today’s repurposing idea and my own little miracle cure.  Thanks so much for stopping by every day and sharing my posts with your peeps.  Let me know what you think in the comment area.

Find me on Facebook and Instagram where I post lots of different pictures.

And…….BUH BYE NOW – Said in a loud high-pitched old lady’s voice, because how else could you say BUH BYE NOW?

  • What a creative idea!!! I love yours!! Now, I need to find a piano bench. I also wish I would have known about those essential oils. I had the same junk last year and missed out on a family cabin trip....☹️ And no shame here, I cried like a baby.... ????

    • OMG, that's awful. And that was the worst cough I've ever had...didn't know if I had mentioned that. ???? Those two oils worked for me so well, but I had someone else mention adding eucalyptus to that mix, also. I have that tucked away in my memory bank!

      • And now it's tucked away in mine... Ummmm, I'm kinda thinking,???? you might have mentioned a cough.... ???? It was the Devil, I say!!! ???? Whew!! Sure glad we made it out of that one! ????????????????

  • Def add the eucalyptus and I NEED ONE OF THOSE CABINETS! Great idea and fab job you guys! Love this blog, have I mentioned that :D

    • Ha...thanks, Kim. And, I just realized that eucalyptus is in DoTerra's Onguard.

  • You have inspired me to convert my piano bench. I’d love to know how Deb attached the shelves, did she screw from the back?
