The Back Stairway in the House is Complete

I just had to share with you here that the back stairway in the house is complete.

And, I am beyond thrilled.  Now if you remember… we wanted to build our home to look like it has been around for 100 years.  We wanted the large ticket items to be timeless and classic because we didn’t want it to all go out of style in a few years to come.  This is our forever home and we want to do fun projects here and there and not huge remodels.  This style of newel post is one that I have loved FOR YEARS.

The Back Stairway in the House is Complete

When I was in my early 20s, there was an auction held every Friday night.  It was about a 20 minute drive.  Every single Friday night, I would get off of work and run down to the auction house to see if there was anything that I wanted.   We had such a great time.  It is where my love for antiques started.  It’s also where I started so many of my collections:  wooden spoons, yellow ware bowls, rolling pins, antique furniture, etc.  It is also where I found an antique newel post from an old house that I paid only a few dollars for.  It was one of my favorite items from that auction.  And, I actually still have it and use it as a plant stand.  What does my auction new post have to do with our stairway in the house?

It is the same exact style.  When we were in the planning stages of our home, I saw the plain and simple square railing and knew it’s what I wanted.  And, I didn’t even think twice about it.  I remember people asking me if I was going to do metal balusters or really small spindles.  Nope.. I wanted the square newel post with simple square wood balusters.  No frills…  just plain and simple.  I feel like this square stairway railing makes a BIG statement without being too overboard.

I lived in a home years ago that had this same stairway railing and I believe it was built in the mid 1920s.  And, when I showed this stairway railing over on our social media stories, I receive a message stating her grandmother’s house had this same railing.  She said this reminded her so much of that house and it made her happy.  It was also built in the 1920s.  So, my thoughts are that if it was around 100 years ago, it’s a style that will carry me to the end.

For Reference….

This back stairway is in our utility room.   It is the room we will walk into off of the garage.  And it leads to a gorgeous space above the garage that we will be working on soon.  We want to turn it into a very functional space… we haven’t figured out what yet, but we have a few ideas.

I am so happy with how this back stairway turned out and cannot wait to see the main stairway off of the entryway.  That should be almost done tomorrow.  Stay tuned for that reveal because I will for sure share here.

  • As I read this in my living room I’m looking at my similar stairway, although unpainted! My house was built in 1916. I love it!!!!

  • I keep commenting with “I love it or it’s gorgeous” but that’s how I feel. So thrilled for both of you to have this beautiful space to call your forever home🙌
So, one more time…😂….the stairway is spectacular.👍🏻

  • Your home is stunning! Everything looks amazing! I’m extremely happy for both of you and Miss Ivy too. I can’t wait to watch your vision in placing your furniture and decorating it and cozy fires in your gorgeous fireplaces, music playing from your speakers. I’m so giddy for you! ❤️🤗😍

  • The front and back staircases are fantastic. The newell posts are perfect and are exactly like the ones in my grandmothers 115 year old home. Classic and sturdy just like wonderful old farmhouses!
