Tips to Make your Outdoor Spaces Feel like the Inside

This post is sponsored by Kohl’s and Collective Voice.

Did you see that I have been working on the porches?  I have been so excited to get the outdoor spaces spruced up like the inside of our home.  That is one thing that I don’t skimp on.  We both love the inside of our home fully decorated because we think it makes them feel more cozy.  The same goes for our outdoor spaces.  I love to add a lot of home decor on our porches to make them feel like an extension of the inside of our home.  I wanted to share a few tips to make your outdoor spaces feel like the inside.  And, I wanted to share a list of items that I look for, along with a few options as well.

I rounded up all of the items in this post from Kohl’sKohl’s is a place that Deb and I shop frequently.  They have everything you need.  You really can’t beat the prices.  And then there is Kohl’s cash. Tips to Make your Outdoor Spaces Feel like the Inside

Again.. We prefer our outdoor spaces to resemble the inside of our home.  So when I plan them, I think of everything that I love inside and find items that will work outside in the elements as well.

Indoor / Outdoor Rugs

Rugs tie a grouping of furniture together and make your space feel cozier.  Rugs are something that I have all over the inside and outside of our home.  When choosing one for an outdoor space, it’s a good idea to choose one that can be used indoor and outdoor both.  That way you can move it around to create different looks.

Designer Tip:  When choosing a rug for an outdoor space, make sure it matches the inside of your home as well. If you have mainly different wood shades and whites inside, don’t choose a really vibrant colored rug for your porches.  You can add a pop of color with throw pillows in these areas if you want color.

This rug by Well Woven is a great option. It comes in several neutral colors and would work in so many different places inside and out.

Outdoor Furniture

You, of course, will need somewhere to sit and enjoy your outdoor spaces.  I like to mix and match my sets. I think it makes the spaces more interesting.  So if you are drawn to a complete matching set, use them.  But add a few different pieces that may belong to another piece.  Or add a random side table with two matching chairs.

This cute little bistro chair set would be perfect for meals on a small porch… card games, or for serving cocktails.  You could add something like this tree stump end table by another set of chairs like I did.  It’s not matchy matchy but it still blends.

Coffee Table and Side Tables

When it comes to outdoor coffee tables and side tables, anything goes in my book.  I used an antique coffee table that I had in storage.  But, I absolutely love this rustic wicker coffee table with storage.   It serves so many purposes.  I ended up adding this tree stump side table to this area, as well.  I love the way it looks.  It adds interest and texture to this space.  If your space is small, this tree stumps table would also work to use it as a little coffee table in front of your chair.

Ottomans and Benches

Adding an ottoman to your outdoor spaces is such a great thing.  It can serve as something to prop up your feet… or a place for your grandsons to sit.  Ha!  I love this geometric woven pouf by Sonoma.  It’s the perfect color for a porch setting as I don’t think it would show a lot of dirt.

Table and Floor Lamps

Lamps on a porch may be somewhat controversial.  But I actually think they look so pretty.  Especially if you add a night light bulb to them and leave them on all of the time.  It’s fun to pull up to our home in the dark and see little twinkle lights.  This table lamp by Martha Stewart is a gorgeous neutral color that would also match inside once porch season is over.

Here is a tip for keeping lamps from blowing off the porch:

Use velcro on the bottom of the lamp and the surface of where you want it and it will stay put.  Trust me.  We did this with our lawn chairs on our deck by the pond.  After they slid off into the pond 4 times, we used velcro on the bottom.  They stayed on the deck this winter during the 80mph winds.  Ha!  We thought that was pretty funny.  And have our lamps on the porch secured the same way.

Flower Pots and Containers

What would a porch be without flower pots and containers.  I love to mix and match random ones and not have them all the same.  This square resin flower planter by the HC Companies and this flower pot planter by Sunnydaze are both great options.  They are big enough to hold a tree or a large fern.  Set them close by the front door or by the entrance of your porch for that cozy feeling.  Both of these would also work inside your home at season end.
