Antique Cabinet in the Dining Room

I have been asked by several people, “Why are you putting so much money into a rental?”  I think I may write a post on “How to Decorate a Rental for Free” soon.  ???? Because, you guys… We have not put ONE DIME in this rental.  We hung our own antique cabinets for extra storage in the kitchen… which will all be taken with us… along with our appliances.  The only thing that stays in the kitchen are the white cabinets that I use for extra storage.  The owner bought the paint and we painted.   If you remember, the bedroom was lime green and the living room was dark brown and bright yellow.  Before and after post coming soon.

In all reality, we may be here for a year while we build.  I know how long the building process can take.  In order for me to run my business out of my home, I need to have a nice place for decor.  Therefore, we hung curtains in every room, which will ALSO be taken with us.  It was in the contract when we left the original House on Winchester that we were taking several chandeliers.  Rather than put them in a giant box and take up space in the storage unit, we hung one in the kitchen after we added a plug, and one in the dining room  They will both go with us.

Now that all of that is clear… I wanted to show you this cool antique cabinet we found.

Antique Cabinet in the Dining Room

I was in love as soon as I saw this piece.  Number one, my style is woods and whites with green.  Number two, I love old chippy pieces.  And number three, I love old pine cabinets.  Won’t this look so pretty in my new kitchen?  ???? It has SO MUCH storage and it stands tall at around 86″….. which is over 7′ tall.   Isn’t it the coolest?

I wasn’t even looking for a huge, antique, chippy, pine cabinet.  BUT, I can’t let certain pieces get away, and this was one of them.  Rather than stuffing it into the storage unit, I moved a bunch of things around and stuffed it here in the dining room at the rental. ????  We did the same thing with the 7′ fireplace mantel.   Deb says I can stuff more furniture into one room than anyone she’s ever seen.  ???? (That may be another blog post, too, explaining how I accomplish that.)

What are we using it for now?

I have visions of this cabinet being used for our home canned veggies in our new home, but who knows.  I change my mind at the drop of a hat.  But currently, the one door is being used as our liquor cabinet.  It works perfectly because it is a few steps outside the kitchen door.  The other two doors on top are extra kitchen storage, etc.

The bottom part is currently holding a bunch of decor that I am not using.    Since the house is only around 1100 sq feet, we need all the storage we can get.  It works perfectly for that here in this little rental.  I hung an ivy wreath that I’ve had in my stash for a few years on the front.  And, just displayed my 3 white ironstone bowls underneath.

I look at pieces like this and want to know the history so bad.  Wouldn’t you have loved to see it in it’s original condition in the first home that held it?  Do you think it was a built-in for a walk-in pantry.  ???? For some reason, that’s what comes to my mind.

I really didn’t need another tall cabinet considering I have plenty, ???? BUT, I will sure enjoy this piece.  What do you think?

  • Love your "new/old" cabinet for your room! When you buy a piece this large, do you and Deb move this yourself? Have help? Antique store help you???
Reason for asking. Many years I bought a extremely large hutch (two pieces) in pine at an antique store in Michigan. I lived in Knightstown, IN and had to rent a large flatbed to bring it home. Had my son, husband, DIL and myself. The antique store was no help at all. This is a very large well known place in Michigan. Are all antique stores like that? Most of the time, with any purchases, we could handle it ourselves. When I sold my 150 year old home (downsized), I left the cabinet there. Just too large and heavy to move and didn't have a place for it in new space. Just wondering since you two neat ladies have many large pieces.

    • This is in two pieces and we moved it ourselves. Since we've been working out at the gym, it honestly isn't as bad as it felt before.... but... antique stores don't help at all around here either.

  • Oh my everything is so beautiful.. I'm looking forward on seeing you home tour ..You must put things around your home a hundred times before keeping it in one place ….I know I do that change things around hundred times before im happy with it...i am dying to see your new /old house when it done....ps I hope to see you on you tube soon...oh and let not forget ivy she is just lovely

    Cheers

    • hahaahah Awww.w. thank you. I need to up my you-tube game. The move threw a loop into a lot. ????

  • The cabinet is gorgeous and the latches are definitely to die for!! I love the look of all the wear and tear too. Great choice!!

    • Thanks so much. That was two of the things I loved about it too. The patina and the hardware. And the hardware works so well, too.

  • That is such a beautiful piece! As I am reading, I keep thinking of my hutch (my grandfather built) that is sitting out on our enclosed deck which my husband is currently using for his tools.

You two are so inspiring to watch and make all you accomplish so doable. I look around our house now and see so many empty spaces that can be filled!

    Thank you!

  • You have to create a home that you love and find happiness in no matter if you own it or rent. I love your style and am constantly amazed at how uncrowded your crowded space seems.

    • Thank you so much. I totally agree with the happiness in your space. I could never get comfy and relax in a home that didn't feel like mine.

  • Oh my God I love you two so much you’re my dose of happiness every day ! A question I have is a rude one but I’m going to ask anyway… Typically what is the price range of the piece that large. Thank you for your inspiration and for your playlist!

    • Thanks... I used to not pay much for my pieces, but these days the prices are HIGH.... If I can find a piece that I LOVE and I know I will be keeping for many, many years to come, I don't hesitate to pay $600-700. People usually ask WAY more than that so that's why I will still purchase. I have a few pieces that I paid that much for but most of the time $100-200.

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS CABINET! Plus, I love your style! And your visions brought to life!!! You go gurl!

  • LOVE LOVE the new cabinet! I say if your living in a rental why not make it comfortable for you! Thanks for sharing!
