Camper Renovation: Kitchen Backsplash

The camper is far from done, but I like to give you guys updates throughout this entire project.  We’ve had a few Happy Hours out there already.  ????  Remember when we hung the wood wall peel and stick wallpaper in the bedroom?  We technically bought it for the kitchen, but decided a wood wall in the bedroom would look cool, but we ran out and had to reorder.  Well, the paper came in and we installed it as a backsplash in the kitchen.  And I LOVE it!

You all know by now that I can’t have my spaces dark.  It feels heavy and too overwhelming to me.  BUT… I wanted to stick with my favorite woods and whites theme.  And, when we painted the ceiling, walls, and cabinets white, it seemed very stark and cold.  I wanted to warm it up with wood.  Keeping “weight” in mind, we decided to add wallpaper.  (You don’t want to add too much weight to campers since they are made to pull with a truck.)

Camper Renovation:  Kitchen Updates

Paint Colors

We painted the ceiling in the camper a white right off the shelf in flat.  Which means, I didn’t have the paint store add any tint.  The walls are painted Sherwin Williams Pure White in a satin sheen.  SW Paint boy told me that Pure White is their white with the LEAST amount of tint.  So basically it’s one shade different than white off the shelf.  And, the cabinets are white right off the shelf in semi-gloss.

Wallpaper

The wood wall is a peel and stick wallpaper.  It is almost like a contact paper but I could easily remove it several times, unlike the old style of contact paper.  If you are doing any type of big wall, you will more than likely need an extra set of hands. It just makes it easier.  And now that we have done the backsplash and the bedroom wall, I will say that I figured out a tip that will help any of you who are hanging this.

Since this has a rustic look, and it has pretty straight lines of the wood pattern, I ended up cutting it in smaller pieces along the straight lines of the wood pattern, and installing those smaller pieces in difficult areas above the sink.  It was a lot easier to do it that way around the vent hood, also.

AND…..  The bedroom has been hung for several weeks now and it has gone through lots of temperature changes and it’s performing well.  There are no loose edges, etc.  We did have a problem with the bird wallpaper in the bathroom only because we didn’t prime the walls first.  The dining area wallpaper is still performing great with temperature changes because we primed those walls.  So, my advice to you, if you are wallpapering over original camper walls, prime the walls first with a flat paint, and you should be fine.

What’s next for the kitchen….

We bought a fancy schmancy kitchen faucet because we loved the look.  That needs to be hooked up yet, along with installing the sink.  I bought some peel and stick countertop paper to give the countertops a makeover.  That will be coming soon.  So stay tuned to Instagram stories.  Lots of people are interested in this product because for so little money, you could update your countertops.  It is perfect for a rental because you could peel it right off when you leave.  And, it’s also perfect for people who don’t have the means or tools to install new countertops.  It’s an easy solution.

And we will be getting some type of window treatments.  I bought white curtains for every window because blinds are SO EXPENSIVE.  We will be buying two for the bedroom but the rest of the windows will just have some time of curtains.  Anyway….  the white curtains were so white, they looked blue.  So they went back.  I hated them.

Let me know what you think of the makeover.  I’m just so pleased with how it turned out.  And, I’m pretty impressed with the performance of the wood wallpaper.

  • Such a change! Love the look, and can’t wait to see the rest all finished. These projects are getting me through these days spent at home.

  • I'm renovating a camper too. Love that wood look peel and stick and have a couple questions. Did you remove the trim around the window when you applied it and did you remove the vent hood to do that wall? You did a great job!

  • Love this all so much. It's such an extension of your home style. You've added so much pizzaz with so little $$ but lots of good planning and elbow grease. Your wallpaper really pushed things up a notch.
Re windows. Would queen or king pillowcases make good curtains if gathered on rod? Just thinkin'.
It's all very inspiring. I am VERY SOUR today. Have no patience with people telling me they're bored. If you're over 70, figure it out. We're all in this together so be grateful you have a nice home, food, etc. Yes, we are ALL restless but remember, a BORED person is a BORING person. Have a good one!!!

    • I love that comment about “a bored person is a boring person”...I never thought about it like that, but you are absolutely right! Love being home and retired and we never get bored!!

    • Also, Love the camper! What a difference. Can’t wait to see it completed. Are you going to show us a picture of the outside and do you have plans to renovate the outside too?

  • I am so in love w your renovation!!!! I so look forward to your daily posts! Can’t wait to see what else you have up your very talented sleeves !!!

  • I'm so in love with what you've done with the camper! I cannot handle dark spaces either. I completely understand what you mean about heavy and overwhelming. It's a real physical reaction and feels very oppressive. That's why this look will never go out of style for a lot of us. I've been painting everything white for almost 40 years! It's so much fun to follow along. So enjoy you both on Instagram!

  • I love it, Danelle and Deb! You have created another design masterpiece! It's beautiful and budget-friendly!

  • Love love love this!!! I hope you don't get bored as your daily posts on instagram sure give me something to look forward to! You are both sooooooooo talented.

  • What an awesome update!!! Thank you for all your reno savvy ideas!
Watch you and Deb daily! Love your decor style!
    You two are inspirational!

  • Love it!!!! It is beautiful! You won’t want to move out and into your new house????
