Family Room Beginnings

I have no clue why I started my entire blog and room reveals with the upstairs of our house, but I did.  I believe it’s because the first room I showed you was our entryway which included the stairway, so I just led you right up those steps to the stairway landing.  I showed you a few rooms upstairs, and I now decided to take you downstairs.  That’s a little bit of my A.D.D. kicking in.

If you don’t know by now, we bought ourselves a hoarder home.  ????  You can read about how we acquired it in a previous post.  It was a complete disaster that was very frightening to the average Joe.  I was the average Joe.  Deb and I walked through the house the first time and when I got 3 steps in the door, I had to leave due to the onset of a panic attack.

Family Room Beginnings

Hoarding is a terribly sad situation.  Here is what we saw of the family room.

For some reason, I thought that turning these pictures into black and white would make them look a little better than full-fledged color.   ????  It didn’t work.    The downstairs wasn’t as bad as the upstairs which was a plus.

I can’t even begin to tell you all of the feelings involved in remodeling this house.  In the beginning, we were terrified.  We were afraid what we would find under all of the “stuff.”

Deb:  “What if some type of animal pops out?”    ????

Me:  “Um…… I will shat my pants!”  ????

You guys, the windows didn’t even close, so that was a huge possibility.  There were cat boxes still here so we didn’t know if we would find live cats.   Raccoons and squirrels also crossed our minds.  UGH… Scary stuff!

The sadness of the situation soon set in.  We were slapped in the face with the life of someone who was very sad and lonely.  We completely grasped and understood the feelings of what happens when a person just can’t deal with life anymore.  It is a truly devastating “disease.”

We then became very confused and questioned if we could even live here.  We talked about finishing this job, selling it, and continuing on with our dream of moving south and buying our little miniature donkey.  Awwwww.  Remember that plan?

By the way, the wifey asked if I wanted to go to Tennessee for the weekend not too long ago.  I refused.   We are “fly by the seat of our pants” type of people.  Deb actually calls us “Wild Cards.”  ????  I can seriously see us going for the weekend, coming back and slapping a FOR SALE sign in our front yard.  I don’t think we will even go there and get tempted.  Moving two times in a year was enough for me to search for the nearest cliff.

Details, Details, Details

This room is HUGE.  It’s basically the same size as the master bedroom which is located directly above.  They are both long rectangular rooms that are approximately 15′ x 28′.

Amongst everything else, these sconces above the fireplace had to go.    You should know by now I need something a bit more gaudy than those.

I don’t believe this house had been touched since the 80s.  How do I know this?  Wasn’t green, blue, and “mauve” all the rage back then?  It seems as though we all wanted a change from the avocado green and bright orange decor so we went with Hunter Green, Dusty Blue, and Mauve.  ????  Wow, flashbacks!  Eek!

Looking Forward

Guess what tomorrow is.  It is our Five on Friday.  I need to warn Deb this afternoon to start thinking about what she will share.  I wonder if it is going to be hateful things like it was the last post she shared?

Speaking of Deb….  She got herself a little part-time gig at the local hardware store.  (That’s a story in itself that I will share later.)  It was all quite comical watching her get ready for her first day.  She performed a few squats to verify her butt crack wasn’t hanging out the top of her pants and sorted out a few other concerns.  ????  She hasn’t actually worked for someone for several years, so this was a big step…. Kind of like she was starting “Kindy-garden.”  ????

Thanks for stopping by.  Check us out on Facebook and Instagram where we share a few extra pictures.    You know I can’t leave you with a pooped up post of ugly pictures, so I will give you a glimpse of an after shot of the living room.

I pledge my love!

Buh by now, said in an old lady’s voice!

  • what colors and brand did you use to paint the fireplace? Is it chalk paint? It's beautiful and I want to make mine similar to it. I have been looking for wood appliques but can't find one like the one in the center.

    • The applique was original to the fireplace. And it was dark gold and then we painted it a lighter gray and didn't like it. So we painted it white with some white we had on hand and then sanded it really well.
