New Table on The Stairway Landing and Why I Paint Everything White

OK, literally, you guys.

I’m hanging in my office/craft room editing pictures and doing a few projects while Deb is at her part-time gig.  I am sitting in an antique wooden office chair on wheels and have it pulled up to my desk.  I must have leaned a little too far to the left, the chair rolled out from under me, and I landed on the floor.   Who else can be so engrossed in their projects that they just fall right out of their chair?  Wow!  The wifey would have been so impressed had she been home!  ????  That takes talent, people.

New Table on the Stairway Landing

We were at my parent’s house a few weeks back.

My dad said, “Do you want this table?  You can have it.  Deb will have to put it back together though.”

Um………………………………ya!  ????

It was in about 4 pieces.  The top was all beat up and needed repaired and sanded.  There was a big crack down the middle that Deb filled with some type of wood putty.  I have no clue.  She does her part and I do mine.  ????  I, OF COURSE, painted it white.

Why My First Color Choice is White

I get asked a lot about why I decorate with mostly whites.  I have to start by saying that I truly love color.  I love to see color in other people’s homes –  walls, furniture, and fabrics.  When I help people decorate their homes, it’s NEVER all white.

I believe I’ve told you before that living with lots of color stresses me out.   It feels too busy and too heavy and I feel very unsettled.  You are all probably thinking I’m cuckoo for cocoa puffs, but it’s true.   I can handle earth tones, like greens and darker wood color furniture, but it has to be added to some color of white.  I’ve only figured that out about myself in the last five years or so.  Wouldn’t you think that at the ripe old age of 150, I would know myself by now?

Trust me, we’ve gone through a wide range of colors.  We’ve had a red kitchen, a DARK brown bathroom, and an orange living room in our previous houses.   We’ve gone through a whole host of different looks and styles throughout our past but I began to realize that after a short while, sometimes less than a year,  I ended up re-painting it a totally different color.

One day it dawned on me.  Everything that I had painted a cream color or white didn’t drive me crazy.  Everything else would be re-painted.  The same goes with furniture.  Several years ago, I painted lots of furniture black and a few pieces white/cream.  The black furniture got a makeover after about six months and the white/cream is still the same after several years.

Besides, do you know how easy it is to add other colors with accessories like pictures, pillows, and curtains to whites?   Your decor can easily be changed for the seasons which means a completely different look without re-painting an entire room.  I’ve seen so many white rooms with pops of red for Christmas and it looks so pretty!

Sometimes things don’t go as planned…

I had full intentions of selling this piece until I saw it all painted up and pretty in it’s little white attire.  The only good place for it would have been in the master bedroom as a side table, but there is no storage so that won’t work for either of us.  I had this little idea that maybe I could put it in front of the dormer window on the stairway landing.  There was nothing there currently and you know I like my rooms all “pooped up” with lots of stuff.  So, basically it was feeling a little empty up there.

What do you think?

I think I love it……        For now!

  • That was a beautiful table your Dad gave you. It was a good idea to fill in the crack on top with wood putty. I wouldn't have known that. Beautiful paint job and thanks for sharing. And no more falling out of chairs. LOL!

    • haha thank you. It happened so fast. One second working and the next second I was on the floor. So weird. LOL

  • Great table!! Love this area like all the other spaces in your home. Also, you look great for a 150!! I wouldn't have guessed you a day over 120.... ???? Jk and watch that chair! ????

  • I have been going through a paint everything white phase recently. I loved reading this and hearing why you have done it too! Thanks for sharing. I love your home and love what you did with the table.

    • Thanks so much. I like my spaces full so I think white helps calm the space after decorating with all of the "junk." LOL

  • What brand(s) and color names of white are you especially fond of using for walls and woodwork?

    • Stephanie, we just bought white right out of the can from Sherwin Williams in a semi gloss for all of the trim in our house. And we painted every room the same color, which is SW Pearly White.
