My Latest Thrift Store Flip of a Vintage Silverware Box

I love sharing items that we find from the thrift stores and flea markets. And I share them any time I find something fun and interesting.  Check out some of my past antique hauls in case you missed them.  It’s also fun flipping thrift store items that I pick up.  This lamp was thrifted and flipped several months ago and it’s probably one of my favorite flips.  And I used crackle paint to flip something new into an architectural replica.  Last week, I came across a fun piece and knew immediately what I had to do with it. Here is my latest thrift store flip of a vintage silverware box.

My Latest Thrift Store Flip of a Vintage Silverware Box

Deb and I ran to town for some errands the week before last.  And when we go to town, we always stop at thrift stores.  Most of the time, we find nothing.  Well, this time we brought home only a few things.  But I saw a vintage silverware box at one of them and had this vision for a makeover.  I actually talked about it on social media stories as we have made over quite a few of them.  But, I left it there.  And, couldn’t stop thinking about it.  A week later, I had an appointment in town and decided to stop and see if it was still there.  I remembered exactly where it was since I had the video. Well.. it wasn’t there.  As I was browsing the aisles for anything new, I happened upon the vintage silverware box in a totally different spot. You better believe that I bought it.  It was even on sale for $12 that day.

First up was removing the velvet and the wood “racks” inside of the silverware box.  Sometimes the velvet comes off easy and sometimes it doesn’t.  This one happened to come off easily but it left a lot of glue on the inside.  I ended up using a heat gun to remove all of the glue.  And then Deb sanded the inside for me, along with the outside to remove all of the old finish.  I decided that I wanted to add an applique for extra interest so I chose a round one for the top.

The vision for this was a rustic box that looks like it has been around the block and back. Ha!

So, I used several tools to distress the wood because I wanted it to look rustic.  I ended up staining it with several colors of stain and despised the color.  After dry brushing it with white paint and adding another coat of stain on top of that, it turned out better.

The sanding process left the inside of the box as raw wood.  So, I added some stain and paint to the sides and used leftover wallpaper to line the inside of the drawer and the box itself.  You could use old fabric as well.  Adding the hardware was the fun part as we used old handles that we had in our stash.

There are so many uses for this vintage silverware box makeover.

I had someone ask over on social media what I would do with this.  And, I can think of so many things.

  • Keep it in your coffee bar for coffee pods
  • Use it in your bathroom or on your vanity for makeup
  • Drill a hole in the back and use it for a charging station
  • Display it on your bedside table for extra storage
  • Use it on your kitchen counter for bills or paperwork you need
  • Store your tea bags

Those are just a few things that it would be useful for.  Let me know in the comments if you can think of anything else.
