Replacing Cold Air Return Covers

I am all about the details.  When flipping homes and even decorating our own homes, I like to pay attention to the small details as I think it puts your home over the top. And, makes it stand out from others.  I changed this one little thing in two rooms of our home.  Can you guess what it is?  We switched out our cold air return covers. And I cannot believe what replacing cold air return covers did for the look of this room.

Here is the before – And, sorry this pic is so blurry.

We Switched our our Cold Air Return Covers

There are 4 cold air returns here on the main floor.  One is in the dining room and one in the family room and we have two smaller ones in our bedroom.  The ones in the bedroom don’t drive me as crazy as the ones in the other rooms.  Every time I walked in the front door and turned toward the kitchen, I saw that ugly vent cover hanging over our antique cabinet.  It just didn’t belong in our home. Ha!

I set out to figure out what I wanted to switch them out with.  I thought about making some as I found a bunch of ideas on Pinterest.  You can make some out of wood and metal, but the metal didn’t fit our style.  I also tried to figure out some type of antique piece that I could hang over it to make it look better.  But, since they are off center and in a weird spot, that would have looked a bit ridiculous, too. So I decided to get new ones that looked old and I replaced the two in the dining room and family room with these.  I may eventually get ones for the bedroom, but did these two first to see if I thought it was worth it.

Look at the difference!  It looks like a little piece of jewelry!

They are DEFINITELY worth the money.

Linked this particular one here, but remember to check the sizes of yours.

Changing out the register covers…

While we are talking about little details that make a huge difference.  I thought I would share this as well.  When we moved into our home last December, they gave us brown register covers…. we have white floors.  Ha!  So we thought about either spray painting all of them white which would have been a hassle once they started chipping.  Or the other option was to buy new ones.  We ended up buying new ones that looked old and that made a huge difference, as well.

These are the ones we bought for our floor registers.

Design Tip

It’s in the fine details that make your home unique. If you can’t, or don’t want to, replace all of your vent covers to decorative ones, replace the ones that you see every day.  There may be a register vent in a room that is very noticeable or a cold air return in a really strange spot.  Simply switching that one out makes a huge difference.

There are so many different styles to choose from.  Check them out here.

This antique cabinet holds my favorite pottery.  See that collection in this post.
