A Repurposed Piano Bench

When we decided to up and sell every property we owned to move south a few years back, we didn’t know that the process was going to happen so fast, and that we would end up in our tiny house.  We had one rental house left, a tiny house (600 sq ft), and nowhere else to go.  Obviously, we didn’t move south.  (Don’t even ask or mention it, because it’s ALWAYS in the back of our minds…)  So, as you can imagine, we had lots of decisions to make regarding all of our “junk” and what we would do with it in the meantime.

Life in the tiny house was very interesting.  I obviously LOVE to decorate and have to have my spaces pooped up and pretty full.  (I wish I had pictures of that house….????)  So, I started by selecting pieces of furniture for their smaller size.  Each end table was carefully chosen to fit exactly in the spot needed.  The kitchen pantry was actually our tall china cabinet we have in the family room.  It fit perfectly in the spot as far as width, and it is only 12″ deep making it the perfect size.  The dressers in the bedroom could only be so wide.  So, I chose the smallest dressers we owned and stuffed each drawer full.

In the tiny house, the bathroom was, well, tiny, too.  This bathroom had a pedestal sink and no medicine cabinet.  That’s when the idea for a repurposed piano bench happened.  I needed some place to store all of my essential oils.  Deb said she would make me a wall cabinet, but the idea of using a piano bench would be a little simpler and less time-consuming.

Deb started by cutting off the legs of a piano bench similar to the one above that had been in my parent’s barn.  I remember that bench being our coffee table when I was young.  Awwwwwww…  ❤

She then used old picket fence pieces we had leftover from another project to make shelves, by using wood glue and air nails to attach them.  I threw a coat of paint on the entire inside and sanded the outside to remove some of the scratches and deep grooved pencil marks from my homework as a child.  ????  Finally, we added an old handle we removed from an old cabinet door.

It worked…. and still works absolutely perfect for my essential oils.  It is currently right off of the kitchen in our laundry room so it’s easily accessible and it looks cute, too.

So there ya have it.  Keep your eyes peeled for old piano benches at garage sales and thrift stores.  You can make yourself an essential oil cabinet or medicine cabinet for that matter.
