You guys just knew I would have to decorate the chicken coop for Winter.  I mean it got a good makeover for Fall so why not Winter?  The Winters are so long here in Indiana and I quite frankly tire of looking out the window at nothing but brown.  brown grass, brown trees, and gray skies.  I love a little green life.  It gives me hope.  Therefore, I usually tuck evergreen branches in everywhere that I can:  urns, flower pots, etc.

Blog Hop: Decorating the Chicken Coop

First off, our rescue, Ivy Rose helped me decorate.  She has to have her nose in everything I do, so therefore, I decided she needed to be in a picture.  Doesn’t she look so cute?  And also, like a little old lady.  ????  Like I said above, I love to decorate with live greens.  I hear you can get them from Home Depot or Lowes for free.   They do a lot of trimming of their live Christmas trees they sell and leave them out for anyone who wants them.  Don’t tell them that I sent you if they charge a fee….  I’m just telling you what I heard.  ????

Home Depot and Lowes are pretty far away from me but the local compost site isn’t.  That’s just down the road from my house.  I know, I know what you’re thinking.  I can’t believe you tell everyone your secrets.  Trust me.  There is plenty to go around.  And, if I don’t get any, Deb’s parents have lots of evergreens for my back up plan.  I usually gather several different varieties of evergreens and sticks to make it a little more interesting.  This year, I found something I’ve never found there before.  Keep reading.

I wanted to use these two green “balls” to add a splash of color to my space.  The one is actually a fisherman buoy.  I removed the janky twine that was wrapped around it.  And the other one is a green gazing ball that I’ve had FOREVER.  I made a bed of “greens” by pushing the end of the greens all the way into the dirt.  The dirt will freeze and keep everything in place usually all Winter.  We end up throwing them out sometime in March.  I found these sticks at the compost site, too.  They still had berries on them so I thought they would look cool.

Adding Hedge Apples and a Wreath

Yes….. I found these hedge apples at the compost site, too.  I was so excited.  They were actually in a little pile so I picked through the ones that weren’t rotten and slimy and thought they would look like little Christmas bulbs outside.  I did the same thing with these.  Deb found this old white enamel commode in her parent’s woods this past Spring.  (Don’t ask)  So, I decided to make a bed of greens and place the little hedge apples on top for some great texture.  I really like how they turned out!

I like to hang a wreath on their door for every season.  The chickens like to feel festive, too.  ????   I hung a simple evergreen and pinecone wreath to give the door a little interest, even though it’s pretty interesting to begin with.  At least I think so.
