A Repurposed Gun Rack

I know, I know, I know, I know… that doesn’t sound too exciting, does it?  A repurposed gun rack.  But “how to repurpose a gun rack into a cubby” sure does.

The beginning of Spring and the beginning of Fall, our small town has something called Heavy Trash Pick-Up.  Which means, you can add almost anything to your regular trash pick up day and the city will take it…with a few exceptions, like carpet, construction/demo items, etc.  But they WILL take appliances and furniture.

Furniture!  ????

You know what that means.  It means everybody and their grandma are out “shopping”.  You get the people who drive around to pick up all of the metal for scrap to make some great cash.  One guy told me that he uses the money from his heavy trash finds for his family vacations.

And then you have people like us….

We hop in our janky truck and scour the city to find good treasures.   Deb likes to look for anything she can use for projects:  spindles, columns, bead board, etc.  Along with furniture, I like to look for anything that can be repurposed into something else.

Like this:

I know, I know, I know… what in the hell can you do with this janky-ass thing?

We came up with something fun!

How to Repurpose a Gun Rack

Deb first started by chopping off the rack part, so we were left with just the little box/drawer combo.  She then added a top and bottom with leftover pine boards that we used on Project Pergola, which we are still working on, by the way.

I removed the hardware on the drawers and the sticker on the front ???? and gave the whole thing a good sanding.

The metal key hole was missing so we added an appliqué, that we had on hand, to cover the hole and make it look all fancy.

We were left with this.

I then used my paint technique that’s a paint/stain combo that gives things an old look.  Let me know if you want a post on that technique because I can throw one together.  ????

Finished Project – Gun Rack turned Cute Little Cubby

I can always find room for an extra cubby.  Remember my office/craft room?  Its filled with them.  ????

It would be perfect by your kitchen sink to hold prescriptions that are taken on a daily basis, in your office for paper and pencils, or even in a bathroom for make-up.

See how we finished this cubby here!

There is another reason for this post.

Not only did I want to show you how we repurposed a gun rack into a cubby, but I wanted to let you know that I am giving this cubby away over on Instagram.  Yes, you heard that right.  One person will win this cute little cubby….which I’m kind of sad about because it looks so cute where it’s at.  ????

The contest starts tomorrow, Tuesday, October 3, 2017 and will run through Friday, October 6, 2017.  So be looking for all of the details over there.  It goes right along with my fun new hashtag that will give us ALL inspiration for some trashiness.

What do you think?  Do you like my little gun rack turned cubby?  Let me know in the comment section or chat with me on Facebook.

Thanks so much for stopping by.  I pledge my love to you all!

Buh bye now, said in an old lady’s voice that is super excited about the giveaway but a little sad to say goodbye.

  • Love this! I would love to see a post on your stain & paint finish. I do one too but there are so many ways to do it. I wipe on stain, wipe some off. With the same rag I wipe on a paint wash, more stain where it needs it & back and forth til I'm happy, again all with the same rag. I've also tried putting random tape pieces on the stain, painting and then pulling the tape off.
    Thanks for sharing this!

  • What a great idea. It turned great. Much more useful now if I say so myself. On a side note, what are your kitchen counter tops? They are gorgeous.

  • Yup yup yup! I'd love to see your paint stain technique! Your house is such a delight to tour through and love your ig stories!!!

    • hahaha thank you. And, I will be working on the paint technique here in the next couple of days.

  • SO.. I can see using this in my bathroom.. to "stash some of those beauty goods.. and the top to display the brushes in their containers,, even that magnifying mirror we all hate,, but have, and have to use because we can no longer see.

  • Oh my goodness! I absolutely love to see your diy projects. I always catch myself thinking of these projects when I’m at antique stores! I’m not kidding when I say that you ladies have transformed my farmhouse!

  • Such a great idea ???? and where I live, every boy made one of these in shop so auctions have them often!
    What an awesome giveaway!

  • I am very sorry to admit that I thought you were crazy!! But I can I stand corrected! Your vision always supposed to be for a loop and i’m here for it!! Thank you for sharing in all of the ways!!
