DO NOT PANIC! This is not a permanent situation here in the kitchen. Let me give you a backstory. When we visited my sister in North Carolina for Thanksgiving, I found these gorgeous columns. (See my entire antique haul here.) My first reaction was how cool they would be on our kitchen island. I had this vision of adding one on each side for added interest. I should say added DRAMA. I am far from dramatic in real life. In fact, I’m probably the opposite. But, in my home decor, I don’t mind being dramatic. I mentioned my plans for these large columns on the kitchen island over on TikTok. Let’s just say that out of the 336,000 views so far, 95% of the people LOVED the idea. 5% said NOOOOOOOO.
But I don’t listen to people when it comes to home decor. And, I don’t follow rules…. you should know that by now.
The comments over on social media are point blank. They either love it or hate this idea. I wanted drama.. and this is definitely dramatic. As I said above, we have these setting on the island temporarily.
My first reaction when we placed the columns on the island was that I LOVE THEM!. The pictures don’t really depict the depth and what it actually does to the space. Our kitchen is roughly 25′ x 17′ and we have 9′ ceilings in there. Our kitchen island is 12′ long. And, I don’t think the pics make it seem that large. The columns actually fill the space between the top of the island and the ceiling. I like to do that with stained glass windows, too.
You know that I love the full look. I love to fill my rooms with furniture and my collections. It adds so much coziness, in my opinion. So, between adding drama and wanting that full look.. these kitchen columns work for me.
We both love the columns and the drama that they added to the kitchen. BUT, it will be a big deal to attach them. So we are going to leave them temporarily setting on the island for about a week. And, then we will take them down to see if we miss them. If we miss them, they will be installed permanently.
We will also be adding some type of a base and maybe a cap on the top of the column to give them more interest. Which means cutting them shorter. So, that is why we want to give it time to make sure we really love the look.
When I get a happy feeling deep down in my stomach, that’s usually a sign that it’s a GO. When I get the it’s-cool-but-I-can’t-commit feeling, normally that’s a NO GO. I had the happy feeling deep down in my stomach. So I will be very shocked if we take them down in a week and don’t put them back up. So stay tuned for that! Because I will be sharing the news everywhere.
Home design and decor are personal. Every single one of us has a unique style. And, if you don’t know what that is, you probably don’t care that much about it. And, that is completely OK. If you do get into decorating your spaces, make sure you take chances. If there is something that you want to try, TRY IT! If you have always wanted to paint a wall black or hang wallpaper somewhere, do it. There are two things that could happen. You could hate it.. or you could absolutely love it!
If it doesn’t work out, who really cares. You can easily switch it back. I
f it does, you will be so happy with the results.
Just do it!

I love them. I know it’s your decision in the end and what makes you happy but have you considered stripping them and staining them to match the other wood tones in your kitchen. They sorta get list being white with the white cabinets and counters. Just a thought. They are beautiful either white or stripped and stained though.

I love the drama touch that they add! Once you have the header & footer on them, they will be that much more 'extra' and perfect for your home! I will be surprised if you decide not to use them on the counter, but know that you will find another fabulous place for them in your home.....so win, win :)
I love them!!!! But, was thinking the same thing as someone else above that the white doesn't show up as well, as they would if they were darker.
I just honestly LOVE most everything about your new home, and the type of things you are using in it; it is just SUPER COZY and HOMEY. I think your taste and mine is quite similar.

I was a decorator for 32 years, and always told my clients that I could tell them what was decoratively correct but I couldn’t tell them what they like. When you arrive home at the end of the day, you should be able to sigh and say “I’m so glad we did this.” Looks like you are well on your way to being able to do this. I think the columns as they are look good. They add grounding and definition to the room, like a period at the end of a sentence, and the distressing contrasts well with the sleek white finish of the cabinets and add texture. Stripping and staining them might make everything look just a bit too “precious” and manufactured. Go with your heart. It’s YOUR house. I love following your adventures.
I could not agree more with you about waiting a bit when not sure. Normally with me I just know but there have been a few occasions that I wait! I like this idea because otherwise there are holes in the wall or something has been altered and there's the gut feeling I should have waited. I am doing this right now on some wall candle holders...oh the perils of decorating!!! My mother used to call it a curse..but the curse is worth the trouble to get that warm and comfy feeling when you walk in a room!!!
