All Things Outside

Artificial Plants on our Front Porch

The porch decor has begun, which is what I have been waiting for.  Decorating outdoor spaces is one of my favorite things to do.  Because I like to decorate them like I do the inside of our home.  We spend so much time out there so why not make it comfy and cozy.  I started thinking about all of our five porches that I have to spruce up and decorate. And the thought of buying and maintaining flowers and ferns for all of them had me stressed out.  Neither of us like watering flowers and ferns every night for an hour.  With this many outdoor spaces, it would take WAY LONGER than one hour to do.  And, I can’t.  I decided to try to sneak some artificial plants on the front porch to see if I like them or not.  And, I am pleasantly surprised.

Artificial Plants on our Front Porch

Not even going to lie.  Seeing the snow and ice falling from the sky a few days ago was enough to throw Deb and I in a tailspin.  We had an entire week of high 60s – low 80s.  And, all of a sudden, a cold front came through a knocked the wind out of our sails.  We both woke up in a terrible mood that day.  Because the weekend before, we got the screened porch all set up which I will be sharing soon.  But we may be on the upswing weather wise now.  Hallelujah!

Like I said above, I wanted to try adding a few artificial plants on the front porch to see if it is something that I would be happy with.

The first items in question were ferns.  I am a HUGE fern person and love them hanging from the porches and placed in pots.  I do NOT, however, like all of the mess that they make.  It seems like we are forever cleaning up their little droppings that collect all around the furniture. Not to mention, there will be no more scrambling to get them inside during a storm so that they don’t get mangled.  So I grabbed a few large artificial ferns to try out.

This one is 48″ and I simply shoved it down in the dirt that was already in the pot on the porch.  I am planning on doing something a little more permanent and will share when I do.  But wanted to see what it actually looked like.  I do have a 40″ one coming as well.  I will keep you posted on that one but I’m expecting the same.

These cedar pine trees are actually sold at Christmas time, which is when I bought them.  I love them so much and don’t think they look like a Christmas tree.  I keep it out all year.  In fact, you may remember seeing them on our fireplace mantel.  I would love a few more.

This small cedar tree that I have on this old cabinet top is another one that I got around Christmas time a few years ago.  It doesn’t remind me of Christmas either.  In fact, someone saw it yesterday and thought it was a real one. I added this one to this basket that added a lot of texture to this space.  The other realistic fern is one that I have had since we lived in the rental.  And, it’s one of my favorites.  I shopped for the rest of the items on this cabinet in my home decor room.

On the coffee table….

I placed my all-time favorite double boxwood topiaries on the coffee table, which look VERY realistic.  Along with a fern that I grabbed at The Nested Fig last year. (Use code DANDD10 at checkout for a discount.)

My little buddy has to be everywhere that I am.  It was only 55 degrees and windy so I brought her blanket outside to keep her warm.  She is the sweetest.

Have you ever used artificial plants in your outdoor spaces?  I was a little leery about it until I got this part decorated.  Both of us are so excited about this idea.  Ha!  We won’t be spending every evening watering.   Also… I am moving a few of my vintage urns to the house today, and adding some ferns to them as well.  I will keep you posted.
